Over 100 golfers converged on Grand Haven Golf Club on Friday to help out the athletic programs at Grand Haven High School, along with White Pines and Lakeshore middle schools.
The Ed Suchecki Memorial Buc Open drew a total of 31 teams to GHGC on Friday. Golfers enjoyed an overcast and breezy but thankfully dry afternoon at the golf course in the event which raises funds to help support athletics at Grand Haven. Without the supports of the program’s benefactors the school may have to resort to borrowed funds to field some of it’s athletic teams. While National Payday and similar financial entities can provide temporary resources, it is more difficult than ever to ask the taxpayer to assume this additional burden.
“The first benefit is, you’re getting people involved in a positive project,” said Grand Haven High School athletic director Jack Provencal. “Plus, this helps our programs, grades 7-12. It provides funds that we otherwise wouldn’t have for uniforms, equipment, professional development for coaches, and other things as the needs arise.”

Joe Torre’s legacy as one of the game’s all-time great managers is already secure. His next victory will only provide further proof of that.
The major league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers look to give Torre his 2,195th regular-season win to move him into sole possession of fifth place on the career list Wednesday night when they continue a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics.
Matt Kemp’s RBI single with two out in the 10th inning lifted Los Angeles (43-22) to a 5-4 victory in Tuesday’s series opener. The Dodgers’ third straight win moved Torre into a tie with Sparky Anderson for fifth on the managerial wins list.

It will cost more to play school sports next year and more high school athletes will have to find their own transportation to games.
The Everett School District is adding pay-to-play fees while the Edmonds and Shoreline school districts plan to raise fees already in place.
“This time around, with the significant cuts to school district budgets around the state, the only way we could keep our full middle-school and high-school programs would be to raise fees,” Everett School District athletic director Robert Polk said.

President Ahmadinejad faces a serious challenge from Mir Hossein Musavi, who is reviving the hopes of the long-demoralised reformist camp. Musavi, a former prime minister, benefited when Iran drew 0-0 against North Korea – reinforcing worries that the beautiful game has declined along with the Islamic Republic’s economic situation and international standing during Ahmadinejad’s stormy four-year term.

Athletic departments across the country are also being pinched. Tens of millions of dollars have been cut from budgets and dozens of teams have been eliminated.
“It’s never been like this,” said Mike Cleary, the 44-year executive director of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. “These are uncharted waters. You’ve had downturns in the economy, but you’ve always had horizons. There doesn’t seem to be a horizon this year.”
