Buc Open boosts Grand Haven athletics

BY MATT DEYOUNG

Over 100 golfers converged on Grand Haven Golf Club on Friday to help out the athletic programs at Grand Haven High School, along with White Pines and Lakeshore middle schools.

The Ed Suchecki Memorial Buc Open drew a total of 31 teams to GHGC on Friday. Golfers enjoyed an overcast and breezy but thankfully dry afternoon at the golf course in the event which raises funds to help support athletics at Grand Haven. Without the supports of the program’s benefactors the school may have to resort to borrowed funds to field some of it’s athletic teams. While National Payday and similar financial entities can provide temporary resources, it is more difficult than ever to ask the taxpayer to assume this additional burden.

“The first benefit is, you’re getting people involved in a positive project,” said Grand Haven High School athletic director Jack Provencal. “Plus, this helps our programs, grades 7-12. It provides funds that we otherwise wouldn’t have for uniforms, equipment, professional development for coaches, and other things as the needs arise.”

Husker Football Opponent Preview

2009 Husker Football Opponent Preview: Arkansas State

by Husker Mike

In Nebraska’s bid to win the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2009, Arkansas State stands to be the biggest challenge of them all. Florida Atlantic seems to be the team that Husker fans look most warily at, with a top 25 offense and a four year starter at quarterback. But frankly, I think Arkansas State is the best of Nebraska’s three Sun Belt foes.

The Red Wolves, who changed their mascot from the Indians last season, are lead by seniors Corey Leonard and Reggie Arnold on offense. Read more

Top ten fantasy Stanford football games

by Dave Fowkes

1. Michigan: A rematch of the 1972 Rose Bowl that Stanford won 13-12. Great marketing tie-in to the past, not to mention a game in the Big House would be fun.

2. Oklahoma: Anyone else remember John Elway and the Cardinal going into Norman, Oklahoma and whipping up on the Sooners 31-14? How much fun would it be to do the same to a Bob Stoops led team?

3. Tulane: Okay, for football reasons it might not be real attractive, but a road trip to New Orleans? Count me in!

4. Hawaii: See Tulane except rather than a weekend in the Big Easy, how about a week on the beach, with some football mixed in. Forget the home and home on this series, Stanford can travel.
