Phillies release suspended INF Ozuna

The Philadelphia Phillies have released Triple-A infielder Pablo Ozuna, who was suspended 50 games in June for violating baseball’s minor league drug program. The 34-year-old former big leaguer batted .294 with 15 RBIs in 51 games for Lehigh Valley this season. Major League Baseball said Ozuna had an elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, a violation of its drug rules.

Jets Running Backs To Be Three Headed Monster

After having the AFC’s leading rusher last season, the Jets added even more to their offensive backfield by drafting last season Doak Walker Award Winner Shonn Greene. You would think that during Training Camp one of these running backs would look subpar to one of the others, but the opposite has happened, all three look great. So the “Three Headed Monster” has been born.

“We haven’t come up with a name yet for all three of us,” Leon Washington said, “but we do want to be the best backs in the league.”

Rex Ryan thinks a ton of his three running backs and plans on using all three in major roles on the team.

Location issues on beanballs

If you’re going to exact on-field vengeance for one of your “untouchables” being hit by a pitch, you better keep your target practice below the waist.

That was the message sent last week by Major League Baseball vice president Bob Watson, who dispenses discipline for transgressions by uniformed personnel.

On the same day Watson decided not to suspend Los Angeles reliever Guillermo Mota for intentionally hitting Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder and getting ejected, the MLB exec suspended St. Louis reliever Brad Thompson for three games.

The Dog Days of Summer

The Philadelphia Phillies came into tonight’s game against the Florida Marlins with no energy, no enthusiasm, and lackluster play. Versatility matters in Major League Soccer

With rosters across Major League Soccer getting stretched like taffy at the state fair, a versatile performer can greatly enhance his value in the big picture in steadily expanding MLS.

It’s one thing if an athlete can play in a position beyond his preferred spot and not be a total disaster at the alternate location. But a fellow who can actually fill a hole and manage to be effective as a stop-gap, that fellow has greatly elevated his stock in the eyes of a manager who is straining to make due during times of smaller rosters and swollen schedules.

A quick look around the league during Round 17 says it all. In fact, in one particular instance, five words say it all: Steve Ralston at left back. Read more

Women’s soccer 10 years after U.S. World Cup title

Failure or progress?

By Philip Hersh

The game is a touchstone for women soccer players, just as the moon walk — the giant step for mankind, not Michael Jackson’s dance move — was for the world 40 years ago, as Ray Meyer taking DePaul to the Final Four was to Chicagoans 30 years ago, as Greg LeMond’s back-from-near-death victory on the last stage of the Tour de France was for U.S. cycling fans 20 years ago.

The game took place 10 years ago last Friday. It redefined the lives of many young athletes and became one of those moments in which the memory of where they saw it became indelible.

Lindsay Tarpley was 15 years old when she watched the final of the 1999 Women’s World Cup with her parents and two brothers — neither a soccer player — in the family room of their home in Kalamazoo, Mich. Read more

MLB rolls out red carpet for All-Stars

By Mark Newman

The last time Major League Baseball ran a parade through downtown St. Louis and included Albert Pujols and the World Series trophy on the trucks, it was to celebrate the 2006 championship the Cardinals had just won.

Guess who’s back, St. Louis?

Pujols and the World Series trophy will be just parts of the MLB All-Star Red Carpet Parade presented by Chevy — an annual baseball tradition that started in that same 2006 season at Pittsburgh. Fans are invited to watch the game’s greats arrive at the 80th All-Star Game as they make their way from the corner of Market and Fourth Streets, down Market to Eighth Street to Stan Musial Drive and Gate 3 of Busch Stadium. College football’s top coaches

In the aftermath of last year’s national title game, Urban Meyer told his friend and kingmaker, athletic director Jeremy Foley, that if Florida landed another big recruiting class a month later, the program would begin to look like USC.

There’s one big difference: Florida plays for — and wins — national titles.

No wonder Meyer has overtaken USC’s Pete Carroll as the game’s best coach. A brief list of why Meyer is the hottest coach in college football:

• His teams at Florida have won two of the last three BCS national championships, and they’re the clear favorites this fall to make it three of four. Read more
