College football’s top coaches

In the aftermath of last year’s national title game, Urban Meyer told his friend and kingmaker, athletic director Jeremy Foley, that if Florida landed another big recruiting class a month later, the program would begin to look like USC.

There’s one big difference: Florida plays for — and wins — national titles.

No wonder Meyer has overtaken USC’s Pete Carroll as the game’s best coach. A brief list of why Meyer is the hottest coach in college football:

• His teams at Florida have won two of the last three BCS national championships, and they’re the clear favorites this fall to make it three of four. Read more

Husker Football Opponent Preview

2009 Husker Football Opponent Preview: Arkansas State

by Husker Mike

In Nebraska’s bid to win the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2009, Arkansas State stands to be the biggest challenge of them all. Florida Atlantic seems to be the team that Husker fans look most warily at, with a top 25 offense and a four year starter at quarterback. But frankly, I think Arkansas State is the best of Nebraska’s three Sun Belt foes.

The Red Wolves, who changed their mascot from the Indians last season, are lead by seniors Corey Leonard and Reggie Arnold on offense. Read more

Top ten fantasy Stanford football games

by Dave Fowkes

1. Michigan: A rematch of the 1972 Rose Bowl that Stanford won 13-12. Great marketing tie-in to the past, not to mention a game in the Big House would be fun.

2. Oklahoma: Anyone else remember John Elway and the Cardinal going into Norman, Oklahoma and whipping up on the Sooners 31-14? How much fun would it be to do the same to a Bob Stoops led team?

3. Tulane: Okay, for football reasons it might not be real attractive, but a road trip to New Orleans? Count me in!

4. Hawaii: See Tulane except rather than a weekend in the Big Easy, how about a week on the beach, with some football mixed in. Forget the home and home on this series, Stanford can travel.

“It’s a big day for us,” said Bobcat head coach Rob Ash. “We feel like these guys will really add talent to our roster.”

Cosme is a 6-foot, 210-pounder from Fullerton Junior College, where last fall he had 40 tackles and two interceptions. He is originally from Lakewood (Calif.) High.

“He’s a rover or strong safety,” said Ash. “Anthony is a real physical player and we like his versatility. He can play like a linebacker and tackle, but he’s also quick enough to play the deep third of field.”

Even football is political as election fever grips Iranians

female-iranian-voters-show-their-colours-during-the-friday-prayers

As Iranians prepare for the country’s increasingly unpredictable presidential election, a national football disappointment yesterday provided a paradoxical boost for those hoping to unseat the incumbent hardliner, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

President Ahmadinejad faces a serious challenge from Mir Hossein Musavi, who is reviving the hopes of the long-demoralised reformist camp. Musavi, a former prime minister, benefited when Iran drew 0-0 against North Korea – reinforcing worries that the beautiful game has declined along with the Islamic Republic’s economic situation and international standing during Ahmadinejad’s stormy four-year term.

Ohio State football: High school camp shares the wealth

By Tim May

ohio-state-footballThere were scores of coaches and hundreds of high school football players. It was the Ohio State summer football camp, but it could have been labeled paradise as far as John Peterson was concerned.

“When I was an assistant coach in the Mid-American Conference, I remember that working different camps during the summer, particularly the Ohio State camp with (then-OSU recruiting coordinator) Bill Conley, was a great time for me,” Peterson said. “You got to mingle with and get to know all kinds of coaches from around the country, and you got to work with and evaluate mass numbers of football players.”

Alabama Football Lands Nation’s No. 1 Defensive Back For 2010

alabama

by Larry Burton

Just north of Montgomery, Alabama, just off I-65, is the little town of Millbrook, Alabama. In this town, when the good football football players leave to go to college, he most go to either Faulkner University, a mostly religious school in Montgomery, or the University of South Alabama.

One is going to the big show though, to play for none other than Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide and play his entire career in the glare of national media coverage.

Demarcus Milliner, a five-star recruit and arguably the best high school cornerback in the nation, has chosen to commit early and secure his spot on what he feels is a team headed to the National Championship.
