Athletic budgets shrink as recession expands

ATHLETICS03ripB.jpgAthletic departments across the country are also being pinched. Tens of millions of dollars have been cut from budgets and dozens of teams have been eliminated.

“It’s never been like this,” said Mike Cleary, the 44-year executive director of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. “These are uncharted waters. You’ve had downturns in the economy, but you’ve always had horizons. There doesn’t seem to be a horizon this year.”
